About this Research Topic
Over half of the global population lives in urbanized areas. These areas have become the geographic focus of resource consumption and chemical emissions. Pollutants among the urban environmental multi-media (including water, soil, air, etc.) are intensifying, causing chronic public health risks and an increase in hazards via multi-exposure pathways and multi-scale distribution differences. One way to measure the impact is with Environmental Health Risk Management (EHRM), widely used as a policy tool. This multi-disciplinary tool collects data for hazard identification, exposure assessment, dose-response assessment, risk characterization, and risk countermeasures.
In recent years, environmental and health studies have drawn significant attention. Current research and development provide important information on the real release, dynamics, fate, behavior, and effect of environmental contaminants. Challenges in environmental health management include:
(1) Shortage of personal exposure scenarios and parameters due to executive difficulty, low cost-benefit, and information security concerns.
(2) Shortage of dynamic pollution data, pollutant transport mechanism, and modeling in a multimedia environment.
(3) Shortage of multi-target applications, especially at the user level.
Many factors influence the degree of EHRM uncertainties, including scenarios, models, and parameters. The advent of Internet of Things (IoT) may bring about a new era of the “4R” (Right Time, Right Place, Right Information, Right Person). Therefore, it is of significance to carry out related studies on smart urban environmental health from Multi-scale, Multimedia, Multi-exposure, Multi-target perspectives.
This Research Topic aims to provide a platform for researchers committed to the progress of smart multi-scale, multimedia, multi-exposure, multi-target environmental health risk monitoring, assessment, and management. Toward user-level requirements, any progress study on “4R” environmental health risk management is welcomed.
