Volumetric video (VV) has emerged as a promising technology for capturing and reproducing dynamic 3D scenes. It enables the immersive representation of real-world objects and environments, offering new possibilities in various fields, including entertainment, education, cultural heritage, and medicine. Creation and consumption of the volumetric videos include several stages: acquisition, processing, compression, analysis, visualization, quality assessment, and human-computer interaction. VVs can be represented as colored point clouds or textured 3D meshes. Because of its unique representation, VV processing has become a hot topic for both signal processing and computer graphics fields.

The goal of this Research Topic is to bring together the latest research and developments in signal processing and computer graphics for volumetric video processing. We aim to address the challenges and opportunities in areas such as point cloud compression, analysis, and processing, as well as textured 3D mesh quality assessment and characterization of volumetric video. Furthermore, explorations for the human-computer interaction, user behavior, data visualization, augmented reality, and human visual perception aspects can be considered, within the context of volumetric video.

We invite researchers and practitioners to contribute original research articles, reviews, and case studies that cover a wide range of topics related to volumetric video processing. The specific themes of interest include, but are not limited to:

• Designing immersive data storytelling experiences through the integration of volumetric videos and interactive visualizations

• Learning-based volumetric video processing and understanding, e.g., 3D action recognition, 4D semantic segementation, etc.
