About this Research Topic
The 5th of June 2023 marks the 50th Anniversary of the UN’s World Environment Day, the largest global platform to generate awareness and inspire action for the protection of our environment. This year, World Environment Day tackles the problem of plastic pollution and the movement will work with governments, companies and stakeholders to find solutions to limit the amount of plastic ending up in our environment. To honor the 50th anniversary of World Environment Day, Frontiers in Sustainable Tourism is launching this Research Topic to address the tourism-specific dimensions of this UN day.
Tourism is one of the largest and fastest-growing industries in the world, with millions of people travelling to various destinations every year. However, this increased tourism has led to a significant increase in waste, including plastic waste and pollution, which has a significant impact on the environment. There is an urgent need to explore how the tourism industry can respond to this global waste and plastic crisis, through innovative and sustainable approaches.
This Research Topic aims to explore the challenges and opportunities in addressing the waste management with specific reference on plastic crisis in the tourism industry. It will examine the extent of the problem of plastic waste generated through tourism, the impact of this pollution, and how the tourism industry can change its ways to adapt towards more sustainable practices.
The research will also analyze the effectiveness and challenges of existing policies and initiatives designed to reduce and manage waste in tourism operations and destinations. This includes examining the role of governments, businesses, and tourists themselves in reducing plastic consumption, managing waste, in general, and promoting sustainable tourism. The outcomes of this Research Topic could provide practical insights for developing innovative and effective strategies in the tourism sector to contrast the global waste and plastic crisis.
