Nanomedicine and phototherapy have emerged as promising fields in the treatment of tumors, leveraging the unique properties of nanotechnological strategies to enhance therapeutic outcomes. Over the past few decades, nanoformulated compounds, nanoparticles, and nanocarriers have been extensively researched for their potential in targeted drug and gene delivery, medical imaging, and theranostic applications. The integration of light-absorbing nano agents with laser irradiation has led to significant advancements in photomedicine, particularly in photodynamic (PDT) and photothermal therapies (PTT). These cancer phototherapies are characterized by their minimally invasive nature, use of non-ionizing radiation, and ability to treat tumors resistant to traditional radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Despite these advantages, challenges remain in optimizing these procedures to effectively treat tumors while minimizing damage to surrounding tissues. Current research is focused on developing novel strategies and nanomaterials to enhance the selectivity and specificity of treatments, as well as improving laser tissue penetration. Recent innovations include nano-biophotonic platforms for precise targeting and monitoring of tumors, and synergistic approaches that combine PTT and PDT with other therapies like immunotherapy, chemotherapy, or radiotherapy. Additionally, precision medicine approaches that utilize patient-specific phenotypes and photoresponsive drug delivery nanoparticles are paving new pathways for cancer treatment.

This Research Topic aims to highlight recent advancements in nanomedicine and phototherapy for cancer treatment. The primary objective is to present cutting-edge developments and innovative strategies that enhance the efficacy and precision of these therapies. Key questions include how to improve the selectivity and specificity of nanoparticle-mediated treatments, how to increase laser penetration in tissues, and how to effectively integrate phototherapy with other treatment modalities. The research will also explore hypotheses related to the synergistic effects of combining phototherapy with other therapeutic approaches and the role of precision medicine in tailoring treatments to individual patients.
