These structures grow continuously throughout a fish's life, with daily material deposition, making them invaluable for studying fish life histories both within and between species. Despite their potential, the scientific community has yet to fully explore the innovative applications of otoliths in aquatic biological sciences. Current research highlights the role of otoliths in reflecting interspecific differences in hearing abilities, which are closely linked to species-specific ecological and life history traits. Intraspecific variations in otolith morphology can be influenced by factors such as diet, water chemistry, and genetic differences, underscoring the need for further investigation into their eco-morphological adaptations, particularly in extreme environments. Moreover, about 90% of otolith research is still focused on Sagittae, while the great potential of Lapilli and Asteriscii is still largely undiscovered.

This research topic aims to delve into the multifaceted applications of otoliths within aquatic sciences, seeking to expand the current understanding of their role in fish biology and ecology. The primary objectives include exploring the potential of otoliths in aging fish, evaluating fish stocks, and comparing populations of the same species across different geographical areas. Additionally, the research will focus on the chemical and microstructural features of otoliths, their morphological and shape analysis, and the use of ancient otolith samples for historical comparisons. By addressing these objectives, the research aims to uncover new insights into the life history traits of fish and develop innovative methods and protocols for their study.
