Glaucoma is a critical area of research within ophthalmology and vision sciences, as it stands as the second leading cause of blindness globally, particularly affecting the aging population. This group of degenerative diseases primarily impacts the optic nerve and results in the depletion of retinal ganglion cells and subsequent retinal neurodegeneration. The two predominant forms of glaucoma are primary open-angle glaucoma, which can be either hypertensive or normotensive, and closed-angle glaucoma. Current therapeutic strategies predominantly focus on reducing intraocular pressure; however, these treatments are not universally effective across all patient demographics. Recent studies have highlighted the need for novel molecular targets and therapeutic interventions, as existing drug therapies primarily aim to delay disease progression rather than provide a complete resolution. This underscores the necessity for a deeper understanding of the genetic underpinnings of glaucoma and the identification of new drug targets to enhance patient outcomes and prevent hereditary eye diseases.

This research topic aims to explore and identify new molecular and genetic targets, as well as innovative therapeutic approaches for glaucoma and its associated consequences, such as neurodegeneration. The primary objective is to advance the understanding of the disease mechanisms and develop more effective treatments that can improve the quality of life for patients affected by glaucoma. By addressing these critical questions, the research seeks to contribute to the prevention and management of this debilitating condition.
