About this Research Topic
The immune system is known to have a significant impact on the development and dissemination of neoplastic processes. This is coupled with the hypothesis that the immune system has a significant impact on post-operative outcomes and the development of metastatic disease burden, with dual and trimodal immunotherapies in conjunction with conventional therapies garnering support, and the ideal timing of regimens ye tot be elucidated.
The goal of this topic is to add to the current body of literature for the use of immunotherapy not only in the second and third-line setting but also for the curative treatment strategy for oesophageal cancer. This will be done by reviewing and summarising current literature as well as translational studies.
We would encourage the submission of all forms or research including; Original Research, Systematic Review, Systematic Review, Meta-Analysis, Systematic Review and Network, Review and Mini-Review, Hypothesis & Theory, Clinical Trial, Classification, Technology and Code, Study Protocol, Perspective, Case Report, Conceptual Analysis, Curriculum, Instruction, and Pedagogy, Brief Research Report, Data Report, General Commentary, and Opinions.
Topics of focus include but are not exclusive to:
1. Which neoadjuvant regime for adenocarcinomas?
a. Surveillance protocols post oesophagectomy
2. Endoscopic management of Early Esophageal Cancer
a. Role of EMR and ESD in T1b and T2 cancers – Is esophagectomy always warranted?
b. Factors predictive of Lymph Node disease in early cancers. Role of sentinel node mapping and modern imaging modalities in early cancers?
c. Barrett’s screening and early detection: what is the survival benefit
3. Translational research
a. Surgery – Inflammation – Tumour Response
b. Immune therapy in the adjuvant and neoadjuvant setting
c. HER +ve tumours
d. Role of imaging in predicting response to neoadjuvant treatment and complete
pathological response.
f. Towards personalized therapy: predicting a pCR following neoadjuvant therapy
4. Non-Operative Management
a. Role of Chemoradiotherapy and Surveillance in complete clinical responders
with adenocarcinomas?
b. dCRT vs Surgery for SCC – the quality of life and survival
c. Management of squamous Cell Dysplasia
Manuscripts consisting solely of bioinformatics or computational analysis of public genomic or transcriptomic databases which are not accompanied by robust and relevant validation (clinical cohort or biological validation in vitro or in vivo) are out of scope for this topic.

Important Note: All contributions to this Research Topic must be within the scope of the section and journal to which they are submitted, as defined in their mission statements. Frontiers reserves the right to guide an out-of-scope manuscript to a more suitable section or journal at any stage of peer review.
