The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) defines Aquaculture as the farming of aquatic organisms. Important aquaculture species include fishes, mollusks, crustaceans, and other aquatic organisms. Aquaculture production plays crucial role in poverty alleviation, and global food security. Aquaculture accounts for approximately 50% of the fish intended for human consumption with significant contributions from Asia, Americas, Europe and Africa. Besides the risks emanating from climate change, environment pollution and antimicrobial resistance, many infectious and non-infectious diseases could substantially jeopardize aquaculture production worldwide. Therefore, deep understanding of disease epidemiology and implementation of surveillance, prevention and control programs is recommended for sustainable aquaculture production.

As discussed in the OIE Aquatic Animal Health Strategy 2021–2025, an average of two new diseases have been added to the OIE Aquatic Code every three years. Endemic and emerging diseases pose a serious threat to aquaculture production worldwide. Accurate information on disease prevalence, associated risk factors, biosecurity practices, and ongoing surveillance, prevention and control programs are highly desirable for sustainable aquaculture production worldwide. This Research Topic welcomes manuscripts from several research fields in order to compile quality information on aquatic animal health and disease epidemiology.

Intended for a large global readership, this Research Topic aims to bring together the aquatic animal health community and to share knowledge, expertise and problem-solving skills. We welcome high-quality research intended to elucidate the dynamics of aquatic animal pathogens transmission, occurrence, or spread within and between populations. Both experimental and observational studies, methods papers that introduce relatively novel tools and techniques, and herd or population outbreaks or epidemics investigation studies are of particular interest.
