The Amazon biome covers 7,000,000 km2 and is home to more than 30 million people. 60% of the Amazon Rainforest is contained within Brazil, with the rest being in Peru, Colombia, Bolivia, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana, Suriname, and Venezuela. The rainforest is home to various neglected tropical diseases (NTD). Neglected or 'forgotten' diseases are a group of infectious diseases, that often affect the most vulnerable populations, which include the human populations living within the Amazon. The most common challenge with NTDs found within the Amazon is in terms of the control and management of these diseases. NTDs within the Amazon are often also classed as rare diseases due to them affecting such a small portion of the population; rare diseases are known to lack support as well as resources with regard to discovering possible treatments.
Alongside the general lack of healthcare accessibility in remote regions of the Amazon, there also an excessive deficiency of healthcare professionals and supplies in these regions. This then often results in negative outcomes for patients who could have otherwise been treated successfully in more populous, urban areas with the correct and quick assistance. It is consequently quite common to observe irregular outcomes for some NTDs.
