The field of transportation safety is increasingly challenged by the rapid evolution of technologies in urban and extra-urban road systems. Despite advancements, a significant problem persists due to the lack of communication and compatibility between safety databases and other data sources, compounded by regional differences in traffic behaviour. This has led to ongoing traffic safety concerns, even in industrialized nations, with vulnerable road users and car accidents on the rise. Traditional reliance on accident data is limited by issues of data quality and availability, prompting a shift towards using non-accident traffic data and other road-related information. Recent studies have highlighted the potential of surrogate data, such as traffic indicators, road geometry, and speed, to measure road safety without relying solely on accident occurrences.
Approaches like "Sustainable Safety" have been proposed to enhance traffic safety, suggesting the development of theories, analytical techniques, and assessment methodologies that consider accident-free periods. However, these approaches require further evaluation to improve a comprehensive understanding of road safety. Recent advances in detection and statistical methods have made traffic safety prediction and modelling feasible, necessitating infrastructures like Geographical Information Systems for sustainable research that future generations can utilize.

This research topic aims to explore and enhance traffic safety practices by integrating road user behaviors, accident data, and significant conflicts with road and junction layout impacts. The objective is to develop and evaluate traffic safety measures, compare driving support systems, and focus on vulnerable road users. The research seeks to answer specific questions about the effectiveness of various safety practices and test hypotheses related to the interaction between road design and user behavior. By doing so, the research aims to contribute to a holistic understanding of traffic safety and propose comprehensive solutions that can be implemented in diverse transportation systems.
