About this Research Topic
This Research Topic aims to provide a comprehensive outlook on the sex-related differences in the asthma prevalence and pathogenesis. We also aim to deepen the knowledge on the anatomical, physiological and environmental mechanisms behind the clinical and epidemiological observations on sexual dimorphism of asthma.
We welcome all article types accepted by Frontiers in Allergy on the following subtopics:
· Clinical and epidemiological observations in sex-associated differences in asthma prevalence and pathogenesis
· Different innate and adaptive immune cells that contribute to sex bias in asthma
· Non-cellular components of the immune system (including DAMPs) that are important for the sex disparity
· Sex-related genetic and epigenetic factors
· Hormonal regulation of immune response in asthma, leading to the sex-related differences at different reproductive stage
· Asthma prevalence and exacerbation during pregnancy
· Anatomical and developmental factors that contribute to the sex dimorphism
· Environmental and life-style factors that affect sex-related differences in asthma prevalence and pathology
· The effect of microbiota in sex bias in asthma pathogenesis
Keywords: Sex difference, airway inflammation, asthma, sex hormones, pulmonary
Important Note: All contributions to this Research Topic must be within the scope of the section and journal to which they are submitted, as defined in their mission statements. Frontiers reserves the right to guide an out-of-scope manuscript to a more suitable section or journal at any stage of peer review.
