Modern Management of Ruptured Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm

Despite the constant progress of modern medical care, cardiovascular risk management, and screening process, up to 50% of patients with aortic aneurysms have an aneurysm rupture as their primary presentation. If not recognized and appropriately treated, this carries significant morbidity and mortality, with untreated mortality approaching 100%. Mortality estimates for patients with ruptured aortic aneurysms are difficult to calculate, but acute mortality has been reported as high as 90% in historical reports and as high as 30-75% with current surgical modalities. This presents an urgent need to address all important points in perioperative management of ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm (RAAA), in order the decrease the rate of morbidity and mortality.

Led by an international team of subject experts, this research topic will investigate the modern management of RAAA. Sub-themes include but are not limited to:
- important factors that could influence preoperative decision making process when encountering patient with RAAA
- important procedural steps with different treatment modalities that could influence the final outcome and occurrence of postoperative complications
- gaps and differences in RAAA management among different institutions and countries
- factors that could influence postoperative adverse short and long-term events
- assess the influence of RAAA centralization on postoperative outcomes



The Topic Editors encourage the submission of original articles (observational trials, RCTs, registry data) and systematic reviews with focus of all mentioned important aspects of RAAA management.
