In recent decades, the continuous population increase, rapid industrial development, and agriculture have caused unprecedented levels of environmental pollution worldwide. Pollutants including heavy metal(loid)s and organic pollutants entering the soil will accumulate in it for a long time, making the soil a sink of those pollutants. Soil pollution has increasingly become one of the world’s biggest challenges for food security and public health. Therefore, it is of great importance to conduct studies on pollution risk assessment and remediation strategies.

Soil pollution has attracted more and more research attention in different disciplines including ecology, agriculture, biogeochemistry, soil science, and environmental science. Numerous approaches that mainly include total concentration-based and bioavailability-based methods have been applied to the risk assessment of soil pollution. According to the preliminary assessment results, physical, chemical, and biological methods have been used for soil remediation. The goal of this Research Topic is to shed light on the progress made in the risk assessment of soil pollution and the development of soil remediation technologies.

This Research Topic welcomes contributors investigating the risk assessment and remediation of contaminated soils. In this Research Topic we invite high-quality Reviews, Original Research papers, Methods papers, Brief Research Reports, and Opinions related to the following, but not limited to, topics:

• Whole-cell bioreporter and biotic ligand model technology
• Bioavailability-based soil pollution risk assessment
• Using biochar for soil remediation
• Biogeochemical behaviors of heavy metal(loid)s in soils
• Degradation, transformation, and immobilization of emerging organic pollutants in soils
• The effect of organic and/or inorganic soil amended on the fate and transport of heavy metal(loid)s in agricultural soils.
