Lignocellulosic biomass represents the primary renewable resource for bio-based materials and chemicals. One of the central issues is the need to phase out fossil-based materials that are poorly biodegradable and based on depleting fossil resources. In line with this goal, lignocellulosic biomaterials are a growing research field. Owing to the increased efforts and interest in this direction, rapid progress has been achieved in harnessing the unique properties and functionalities of cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin. In addition, extracts and other minor components of lignocellulosic biomass are increasingly recognized as functional components of bio-based materials. In order to push the frontiers in this area, we invite original work of the highest standard in the engineering and technological aspects of modern lignocellulosic biorefineries, extending to the design and fundamental understanding of their functionality, properties, and performance in various applications. Studies on Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Techno-Economic Evaluation (TEE) of these materials are also encouraged. It is our intention to be able to build connections and synthesis across these multiple dimensions and highlight the most exciting recent progress in the field of lignocellulosic biomass-based materials.

This Research Topic aims to attract the attention of more researchers and spread their latest progress on lignocellulosic biomass-based materials. Exploration of new raw materials along with design of nanomaterials and their structure-function relationship, mechanisms, and applications are all encouraged. Original research, short communication and review articles are all welcome to present a comprehensive understanding of the recent advancements in lignocellulose-based materials.
