The increase of global generation of municipal solid waste (MSW) is projected to be grown to 3.40 billion tonnes by 2025 due to population, urbanization, and economic growth. Continuous increment of MSW resulted serious impact to global health and the environment. As majority of the MSW is landfilled currently, while composting and energy recovery are rarely practiced. The uncontrolled forms of landfill resulted of methane gas (CH4) emission, which the CH4 gas is 34 times greater of global warming potential than carbon dioxide gas (CO2) throughout 100-year period. Generally, the MSW composition main compose >50% of organic wastes such as food, plastic, paper, cardboard, and glass that consisted of high biogenic carbon with high energy potential.

The use of MSW as take role as supplementary fuel in the form of biofuels (solid recovered fuel or refuse-derived fuel) and gas fuels (biogas, syngas) that provides an option for simultaneously eliminating waste as well as recovering energy and materials. The MSW upgrading process can be performed using either biological (e.g., anaerobic digestion) or thermochemical processes (e.g., combustion, pyrolysis, torrefaction, gasification). MSW-derived fuels potential serves as alternative to direct incineration because it can be easily stored and transported. Compared to unprocessed waste, MSW-derived fuels provides a higher heating value and uniform composition and generates 20 to 30% of energy efficiency.
