About this Research Topic
This Research Topic of Frontiers in Immunology aims to highlight the latest knowledge with regards to the so-called mold and dampness disease or as it appears below, mold and dampness hypersensitivity syndrome (MDHS). This condition has raised a lot of public concerns and is discussed in mass media too. However, medical professionals lack basic knowledge about this devastating condition. There are no approved methods for diagnosis, or clinics might apply variously weak methods with low ROC index. Clinical presentations of this condition vary from patient to patient even in those exposed in the same dwellings, there are no accepted treatment modalities. We may argue that this condition is an emerging disease but at the same time it is a neglected syndrome.
In this topic a group of international experts attempts to pool all the current knowledge regarding the biology, modern taxonomy of the strains responsible for the poisoning a subject. The latest knowledge regarding toxicology studies in vivo and microbial ecology is highlighted. The response of the immune system and clinical presentations of MDHS as well as several aspects of pathophysiology are discussed too. Finally, promising experiences are presented with treatment option that takes into consideration the so-called holistic approach for the correction of the malfunction of the body.
