About this Research Topic
The goals of this Research Topic include:
1. To identify the differences in fracture pattern between pelvic fractures in young adults and that in older patients.
2. To discuss the need to have a specific classification of pelvic fragility fractures (published by Rommens working group), its validation and implication in decision making and surgical fixation of fracture.
3. How can we improve fixation in fragility pelvic fractures? What are the current advances? What is the functional outcome? What are the complications? What are the future directions?
4. To identify the fracture pattern of low energy acetabular fractures in older patients and how they challenge the management of such fractures.
5. To formulate a treatment algorithm based on different factors affecting decision making in the acetabular fragility fracture and the published reports about the outcome.
6. Hip arthroplasty in acetabular fragility fracture: what are the indications? Primary or delayed? Principles? Outcome?
7. To highlight the special care and multi-disciplinary approach needed when dealing with pelvic and acetabular fractures in elderly population.
Main themes to be addressed are as follows:
• Epidemiology of geriatric pelvic and acetabular fractures
• Patterns of acetabular fragility fractures and pelvic fragility fracture presentation including transitional patterns and different variants
• Pelvic fragility fracture classification
• Decision making of surgical treatment, indications and pitfalls
• Specific surgical techniques for specific surgical situations of acetabular fractures e.g. marginal impaction, fixation approaches and strategies, fix and replace philosophy
• Improvements of surgical treatment and strategies
• Outcomes –both short term and medium term including QOL assessment
• Postoperative rehabilitation
• Complications of pelvic and acetabular fracture in older patients
