Background

Over the last few years, there has been a growing understanding and knowledge concerning human health and its association with foods. Additionally, the role of natural compounds such as bioactive compounds with their probable function as health promoters has been found to be very important. As a result, diet-based strategies for the management and prevention of various chronic disorders including neurodegenerative diseases and cancer have become more meaningful, leading to the development of nutraceuticals. In broad terms, nutraceuticals are described as a bioactive components present in various foods and play a vital role in human beings by maintaining their normal physiological functions and well-being. Therefore, nutraceuticals could be useful for the maintenance of human health without causing any harm due to their natural origin. Nutraceuticals are generally considered as safe, and daily consumption of these nutraceuticals could help in the management of neurodegenerative diseases and various types of cancers. This research topic will draw the attention of scientific communities to understand the concept of nutraceuticals and their significance in human health, which could serve as an alternative therapy or nutritional pharmacotherapy for the management of several clinical complications.

Clinical significance of nutraceuticals in neurodegenerative diseases and cancer has drastically increased around the world in recent times. Since, an association between food habits and the individual lifestyle with neurodegenerative diseases as well as cancer has been established. Thus, nutraceuticals could play a very important role as prophylactic treatment for neurological interventions and cancer. Furthermore, neurodegenerative disorders and the curative effects of nutraceuticals can be attributed due to their neuroprotective, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and healing properties, which can target different ligands and receptors to enhance protein synthesis, leading to neuroprotection. The folding of proteins and their degradation can be inhibited, leading to a healthy nervous system. On the other hand, role of nutraceuticals in cancer cells has been indicated causing inhibition at least experimentally in the initial stages of carcinogenesis. However, as a matter of fact, this area of study still requires further in-depth researches. Therefore, considering the therapeutic advantages of nutraceuticals in the management of cancer and neurodegenerative diseases, this research topic could eventually be proved useful in prospecting for new innovations in the development of nutraceuticals and their clinical significance as a potential therapeutic approaches for the management of cancer and neurodegenerative diseases can be put forward.

In this research topic, we welcome the submission of reviews and original research manuscripts that addresses the recent advancements in the field of nutraceuticals and technological innovations in their development for the management of cancer as well as neurodegenerative diseases. We welcome manuscripts with a focus on the following topics below (but not limited to):

• Recent developments and advancements for the production of nutraceuticals from various sources (plant, animal and microbial).
• Nutraceutical food products derived through fermentation process including prebiotics and probiotics.
• Role of probiotics in the management of cancer.
• Uncovering the potential of nutraceuticals as a targeted therapy against various types of carcinoma.
• Role of nutraceuticals in the clinical management of neurodegenerative disorders and related therapeutic opportunities.
• Mechanistic approaches to recognize the clinical implications of nutraceuticals.
• Current technological approaches and advancements applied in food and pharmaceutical industries for the development of nutraceuticals, as well as to improve the functional capabilities of food bioactive components including its bioavailability, stability, quality, efficacy and its delivery system.
• Last but not the least; use of multi-omics and computational approaches to understand the role of food bioactive compounds present in nutraceuticals, protein-ligand binding interactions and its affinity.

Frequently asked questions

  • Frontiers' Research Topics are collaborative hubs built around an emerging theme.Defined, managed, and led by renowned researchers, they bring communities together around a shared area of interest to stimulate collaboration and innovation.

Unlike section journals, which serve established specialty communities, Research Topics are pioneer hubs, responding to the evolving scientific landscape and catering to new communities.

  • The goal of Frontiers' publishing program is to empower research communities to actively steer the course of scientific publishing. Our program was implemented as a three-part unit with fixed field journals, flexible specialty sections, and dynamically emerging Research Topics, connecting communities of different sizes and maturity.

Research Topics originate from the scientific community. Many of our Research Topics are suggested by existing editorial board members who have identified critical challenges or areas of interest in their field.

  • As an editor, Research Topics will help you build your journal, as well as your community, around emerging, cutting-edge research. As research trailblazers, Research Topics attract high-quality submissions from leading experts all over the world.

A thriving Research Topic can potentially evolve into a new specialty section if there is sustained interest and a growing community around it.

  • Each Research Topic must be approved by the specialty chief editor, and it falls under the editorial oversight of our editorial boards, supported by our in-house research integrity team. The same standards and rigorous peer review processes apply to articles published as part of a Research Topic as for any other article we publish.

In 2023, 80% of the Research Topics we published were edited or co-edited by our editorial board members, who are already familiar with their journal's scope, ethos, and publishing model. All other topics are guest edited by leaders in their field, each vetted and formally approved by the specialty chief editor.

  • Publishing your article within a Research Topic with other related articles increases its discoverability and visibility, which can lead to more views, downloads, and citations. Research Topics grow dynamically as more published articles are added, causing frequent revisiting, and further visibility.

As Research Topics are multidisciplinary, they are cross-listed in several fields and section journals – increasing your reach even more and giving you the chance to expand your network and collaborate with researchers in different fields, all focusing on expanding knowledge around the same important topic.

Our larger Research Topics are also converted into ebooks and receive social media promotion from our digital marketing team.

  • Frontiers offers multiple article types, but it will depend on the field and section journals in which the Research Topic will be featured. The available article types for a Research Topic will appear in the drop-down menu during the submission process.
