The exploitation of computational tools for drug development, pioneered by Prof. Donald Abraham, has opened a new field and new opportunities. Prof. Donald Abraham was passionate about "academic drug discovery", particularly the intersection between structural biology and medicinal chemistry. The Institute he founded at VCU, leading research of this kind, was one of the very first of its type anywhere.

This Research Topic aims to highlight the latest, and assess long standing computational methods, techniques and applications fundamental to investigating protein characterization, by highlighting the latest experimental techniques and methods used to investigate fundamental questions in structural and functional protein research. Review articles or opinions on methodologies or applications including the advantages and limitations of each are welcome. This Topic includes technologies and up-to-date methods which help advance science.

The contributions to this collection will undergo peer-review. Novelty may vary, but the utility of a method or protocol must be evident. We welcome contributions covering all aspects of computational protein characterization. Submissions will be handled by the team of Topic Editors in the respective sections.

These manuscripts could be in one of the following forms, or cover the following topics:
• Academic drug discovery in today's climate.
• Methods: Describing either new or existing methods that are significantly improved or adapted for specific purposes. These manuscripts may include primary (original) data.
• Perspective or General Commentaries on methods and protocols relevant, or computational tools or applications
• Reviews and mini-reviews of topical computational methods highlighting the important future directions of the field.
