The rapid development of modern technology puts forward the outstanding advances in the use of materials in engineering applications. The materials used in aviation, aerospace, military electronics, weapons, ships, nuclear, advanced processing and manufacturing, transport, energy and other industrial fields, are facing the increasingly complex operating environments, such as the high temperature, oxidation, corrosion, friction, radiation loading, and mechanical loads. To improve the application stability of the materials in the current industrial field, the design, processing and manufacturing of the advanced engineering materials with better performance are currently the most important and challenging work. At the same time, the material properties mainly depend on the microstructures of the materials. Therefore, a reasonable characterization of the relationship between material properties and microstructure is essential for the optimal design of the materials for extreme environments.

This Research Topic will focus on all advanced preparation, processing and manufacturing technology of all materials for extreme environments, including the metals & alloys, ceramics, polymer materials and composites. The Research Topic will also provide the Materials Scientist/Engineer with up-to-date information on the above mentioned materials with an underlying theme of explaining the behavior of materials using novel approaches. This Research Topic will explore the latest advances and challenges in materials applied under extreme operating environments, the breakthrough and innovation in characterization technologies of the mechanical, physical and chemical properties of the novel materials.

Original Research, Review articles related to the specified subject are welcomed. Potential topics include, but are not limited to the following:

1. Processing of various advanced materials for extreme environments, including metals & alloys, ceramics, polymer materials, and composites.

2. Design, research and development studies, experimental investigations, theoretical analysis and fabrication techniques relevant to the application of materials for extreme environments.

3. Characterization of the mechanical, physical and chemical properties of the conventional and newly emerging material systems under extreme environments; the relationship between material properties and microstructure.

4．Theoretical and experimental studies on the relationships between processing, microstructure and properties of materials under extreme operating environments, such as the high temperature, oxidation, corrosion, friction.
