Entrepreneurship is an individual or organizational level behavioral phenomenon and includes in its domain: the creation and management of new businesses, small businesses, and family businesses, as well as personality and sociological characteristics and special problems of entrepreneurs. Entrepreneurs are important for new wealth creation and economic development. Emergence-related behavioral intentions and behaviors, such as organization formation and innovation, differentiate entrepreneurship from non-entrepreneurship. This refers primarily to the management of existing or customary activities.
The key personality determinants of entrepreneurship refer to six groups of personality characteristics: (1) need for achievement; (2) internal locus of control; (3) need for independence; (4) risk-taking propensity; (5) entrepreneurial self-efficacy; (6) the Big Five personality factors. Other important personality determinants are, for example, innovativeness, creativity, curiosity, and passion.
Despite the recognized importance of personality in entrepreneurship and intrapreneurship, particularly in start-up and growth activities of small and medium sized enterprises, personality aspects of entrepreneurs and intrapreneurs need to be researched in cross-cultural comparative studies. In addition, studies that include sociological elements, which may be related to the formation of the personality or behavior of individuals with entrepreneurial intentions, should be considered.
In this Research Topic, we would like to see a range of original research articles from different research areas and perspectives that examine personality determinants of entrepreneurship and intrapreneurship. To this purpose, there can be three possible directions to be addressed: (1) scholarly reviews or meta-analyses in entrepreneurial personality; (2) empirical studies focusing on personality determinants of entrepreneurial intentions; (3) empirical studies focusing on personality determinants of entrepreneurial behaviors. Especially, we welcome articles about new ways of examining personality correlates of entrepreneurship and intrapreneurship from interdisciplinary perspectives and in cross-cultural comparative studies.
