About this Research Topic
For this Research Topic, we seek to compile a range of manuscripts that focus on the study of marine organisms as bioindicators, where marine organisms can provide an assessment of the concentrations of pollutants in the marine environment as well as the effects these contaminants are causing and the biological processes involved. We welcome manuscripts focusing on, but not limited to, the following questions:
• Which contaminants do we observe in marine organisms and what are the biological effects that they cause?
• What should represent (a) model organism(s) and how to select (a) model organism(s)?
• Is it possible to generalise the outcomes of a study with a model organism, to other organisms?
• How observations in model organisms and alternative approaches are linked?
• How chemical and biological effect thresholds developed with model organisms are applicable to other organisms?
• How to monitor contaminants and biological effects in frameworks such as the European Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD).
• Is it possible to predict ecological consequences of chemical contamination on key ecosystems?
This Research Topic aims to collect all article types: Original Research Articles, Short Communications, Reviews focusing on recent achievements in this field and short Perspectives.
Keywords: model organisms, marine pollution, biological effects, bioaccumulation
Important Note: All contributions to this Research Topic must be within the scope of the section and journal to which they are submitted, as defined in their mission statements. Frontiers reserves the right to guide an out-of-scope manuscript to a more suitable section or journal at any stage of peer review.
