Nonlinear Optical Materials are materials with specific nonlinear optical properties that are widely used in photonics. Especially, in the current development stage of advanced photonics technologies, new micro/nano materials are engineered to show large optical nonlinearities which enable new phenomena, new properties and new applications. Advanced nonlinear optical materials can control light propagation, mold the optical field, generate new frequencies, realize innovative laser devices (mode-locking, Q-switching, harmonics, optical limiting) and nonlinear optical modulators (optical switch, frequency double mixing, bistable devices). The list is forcedly limited but many other optoelectronic functions in communication, detection and computing are enabled by nonlinear optical materials. Still many open problems are left. As an example, how is possible to further enhance the modal purity of beams carrying OAM (orbital angular momentum) photons, and exactly and dynamically measure the mode composition in practice?

This Research Topic "Advanced Nonlinear Optical Materials and Devices" calls for submissions from theoretical, experimental and applied aspects, including nonlinear optical theory; optical field radiation ranges from light wave, terahertz wave to microwave, the nonlinear optical behavior of materials; the nonlinear optical response of materials under ultrafast laser. Topic Editors welcome contributions to emphasize the latest research progress and trends of advanced nonlinear optical materials and devices. At the same time, in the related fields of nonlinear optics, how to regulate and improve the nonlinear optical properties and application performance of new materials has become one of the urgent problems to be solved in the development of optoelectronic devices, optical field regulation, optical information transmission and conversion devices. It is still a difficult problem to achieve excellent nonlinear optical materials with different band responses, nonlinear optical properties and application regulation and modification, to obtain large nonlinear optical absorption, fast nonlinear response and excellent materials with outstanding performance in specific application fields.
