About this Research Topic
Despite this, questions remain as to the optimal application of carbohydrate nutrition to maximize training adaptation, recovery, and ergogenic effects in different contexts. Additionally, many have recently questioned the value of high carbohydrate intake for performance and health, which necessitates further research examining whether selective or near-complete withdrawal of carbohydrate availability is beneficial in specific situations.
The aim of this Research Topic is to examine innovative carbohydrate supplementation and/or dietary strategies designed to maximize ergogenic effects and training adaptations, aid in nutritional personalization of guidelines, and refine recommendations for specific populations and contexts.
Generally, we are seeking Original Research, Reviews, Mini Reviews, Brief Research Reports, and Case Reports. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Novel applications of carbohydrate including form/type, timing, amount/ratio, or co-ingestion strategies
- Dietary manipulation of carbohydrate availability (e.g. high carbohydrate, carbohydrate periodization, low carbohydrate or ketogenic diets) for training, performance, and health
- Carbohydrate nutrition current practices in elite sport and physically demanding occupations
- Interventions (e.g. behavioral, technological, supplemental) to improve personalization of carbohydrate nutrition in athletes and/or special populations
- The impact of environmental context on carbohydrate needs
