About this Research Topic
The relationship between regular physical activity and health has been studied and well documented in the literature. However, the psychological benefits of regular physical activity and psychological predictors that may influence regular physical activity are less clear. Therefore, studies examining the relationship between physical activity and psychological health have received increasing focus in recent years.
In this Research Topic, we aim to address these issues by highlighting research related to the effects of physical activity and exercise interventions on general and mental health, and disease-related outcomes. In addition, we aim to explore the relationship between physical activity/functional skills and mortality, cognition, and disease burden.
The benefits that physical activity can provide to different populations (children, older people, people with chronic conditions, people with disabilities, etc.) will be explored in detail. This forms a multidisciplinary perspective covering the field of kinesiology, medicine, psychology, and physiotherapy.
A multidisciplinary approach to the relationship between different forms of physical activity (type, intensity, frequency, competitive/recreational sport) and psychological well-being aims to provide answers on how to maximize the potential positive effects of physical activity on the psychological functioning of people with different characteristics.
For this Research Topic, we welcome high-quality and multi-disciplinary research that examines the impact of PA on various outcomes (physical, social, and psychological), objective measures of PA, determinants of PA on health and well-being from early to late life. Researchers may focus on the general healthy population or on people with chronic diseases. We invite observational and experimental studies.
Topics include (but are not limited to):
• Effects of exercise interventions or PA participation on functional, cognitive, physical, and social well-being.
• The relationship between sleep quality and PA participation
• Barriers to PA participation
• Objective measurement methods for measuring PA
• PA in patients with chronic diseases
• The relationship between quality of life and PA
We welcome the following article types: Original Research, Systematic Review, Review, Mini Review, Clinical Trial, Case Report, Data Report, Brief Research Report, General Commentary, and Opinion, Study Protocol
Keywords: physical activity, exercise, monitoring, psychological well-being, physical well-being, chronic disease
