About this Research Topic
Blindness affects more than 60 million people worldwide. Accumulating evidences have shown that genetic factors play crucial roles in the disorder of eye development and progression of ocular diseases. Rapid development of biotechnologies facilitates finding out more and more causal genes, susceptibility genes/loci involved in eye diseases. However, most of them can only partially account for the pathology of complex eye diseases, especially for age-related blindness. By studying the interactions between genetic and environmental factors, epigenetic regulatory mechanisms represent exciting aeras for a better understanding of pathogenesis of eye development and complex eye diseases. Also, with the development of our knowledge of genetic or epigenetic mechanisms in eye development and diseases, the landscape for ocular therapy has changed greatly. Molecular targeted drugs, gene editing and therapy have opened promising avenues for customized intervention and new treatments for untreatable diseases.
The aim of this Research Topic is to provide important insights linking genetics or epigenetics to the underlying mechanism of eye development and diseases and design therapies for human vision diseases.
We welcome the submission of Original Research, Methods, Review and Mini-Review articles that cover, but are not limited to the following topics:
