About this Research Topic
Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are considered a new tool for cell-cell communication in the brain, both in healthy brains and within brain diseases. EVs are secreted by all cells under both physiological and pathological conditions and can be divided into three categories based on their biogenesis: exosomes, micro-vesicles, and apoptotic bodies. EVs can be found in many body fluids and enclose membrane and cytosolic components such as proteins, lipids, and many RNAs, including microRNAs and other non-coding RNA species with regulatory properties. EVs represent the fingerprints of their originating cells and can carry a variety of molecular constituents of their cell of origin, including microRNAs. EVs may influence target cells, inducing significant changes that may lead to their contribution to different physio-pathological processes. EVs and their content have arisen as potential biomarkers of diagnosis and prognosis value in Central Nervous System diseases.
The purpose of the present Research Topic is to collect recent research in the field of extracellular vesicle (EVs) in the brain. Different studies on EV have described their role in cellular communication, but a lot of questions remain unanswered such as those concerning EV biogenesis, characterization of EV cargo, and the role of EVs in the brain with particular attention to their contribution to the propagation of neurodegenerative diseases. A better understanding of the pleiotropic role of EVs in brain homeostasis could increase the knowledge needed to develop novel therapeutic strategies to alleviate and reverse neurological diseases. We welcome researchers to contribute either Original Research or Review articles focusing on every aspect regarding the role and function of EVs shed brain cells both in healthy and pathological conditions.
This collection welcomes Original Research, Review, Mini Review, and Perspectives focusing on extracellular vesicles in the brain. Areas of interest could include, but are not limited to:
• Extracellular vesicles released by brain cells
