About this Research Topic
The global effort to address climate change has led to rules and regulations that apply significant pressure on manufacturers to improve the efficiency and carbon intensity of their engines and vehicles. An important area of focus in this effort is the combustion of fuel in the engine and the fuel system plays a critical role in both traditional and advanced combustion concepts. The interaction of fuel and air involves complex fluid dynamics that are influenced both by the injection system itself and the induction of air into the combustion chamber. Improved understanding and modeling of these dynamics will play a strong role in helping the internal combustion engine meet the challenges ahead.
Given the important role that the fuel injection system plays in advanced, efficient and clean combustion, this collection of research papers is intended to publicize new advances, innovations and knowledge related to fuel injection behavior and combustion effects, hydraulic behavior, spray formation and modeling. Removing barriers and revealing insights that allow engineers and researchers to develop improved fuel delivery methods that lead to lower criteria pollutants and higher efficiencies play an important role in a more sustainable transport system.
