Electrospinning technology holds promising potential in the development of scaffolds using a wide range of polymers and their composites with ceramics for biomedical applications such as tissue regeneration, drug delivery, wound healing, and so on. Importantly, electrospun scaffolds mimic the extracellular matrix thereby can provide the natural environment for cellular activities. In comparison to other scaffolds, electrospun scaffolds possess high surface area, controlled structure, mechanical stability and flexibility which meets the criteria for biomedical applications. Fibrous scaffolds can be produced in a laboratory setting in a controlled manner and cost-effectively.

Recent advances showed how electrospinning fibers can be further modified to increase the suitability for special applications by incorporating appropriate drug, gene, and growth factors. These additional modifications have shown great potential in controlled drug release kinetics and maintaining the therapeutic dose for a longer period. Nevertheless, the development of functional scaffolds for clinic needs remains challenging. Herein, the final goal of this Research Topic collection is to address these challenges by the continuous discussion via the route of cross-disciplinary original articles, reviews and mini-reivew on electrospinning-based materials.

The current Research Topic aims to cover promising, recent, and novel research trends in the development of electrospinning-based functional scaffolds. The key areas to be covered in this research topic may include, but are not limited to:

• Development of electrospinning scaffolds

• Application of the electrospinning scaffolds

• Innovative strategies to fabricate the electrospinning materials

• Characterization of electrospun scaffolds

• Implantable electrospun mesh for therapeutic purposes.
