About this Research Topic
In veterinary and human parasitology, many diseases have been excluded from international debate. Certain diseases are recognized as global emergencies, while others are considered niche or have dropped out of scientific interest. This may be due to several reasons which are independent from their health and economic interest. Several explanations may be:
i. The mechanism of the citation index;
ii. Pharmaceutical companies may endorse some fields of research rather than others;
iii. The prevalence of the diseases in remote countries;
iv. Some parasites are elusive and largely unknown.
These neglected diseases should however be taken into appropriate account because such debates are important opportunities for their control, and because they are diffused in relevant socio-economic and epidemiological discourse.
This Research Topic aims to discuss contributions on the parasitic diseases whose economic and health importance and spread is threatened due to the following reasons:
- Underestimated (e.g. poultry ectoparasites and their zoonotic role);
- Erroneously considered eradicated (e.g. habronemosis);
- Lesser known due to prevalence in low-income countries (e.g. Cryptosporidium hominis);
- Unpopular (e.g. eimeriosis in ruminants) and in unexplored hosts (e.g. Eimeria in wild animals);
- Rare and unrecognized (e.g. feline angiostrongylosis).
We welcome original research articles, short notes and reviews that would shed light on these neglected parasitic diseases of humans and/or animals.
