Professional and Scientific Societies Impacting Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in STEMM

Professional and scientific societies are regarded as powerful agents of change in their disciplines. As such, these entities can have a strong impact in fostering inclusive scientific environments and training a diverse STEMM workforce that is innovative and well-positioned to respond to the challenges we face as a society. This Research Topic welcomes submissions that highlight the ways in which professional and scientific societies engage with their membership to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion in STEMM. We encourage submissions from social science/education researchers as well as society volunteer/staff members engaged in this work. 

This Research Topic aims to capture and highlight the different ways in which professional and scientific societies foster the diversification of the STEMM workforce. We invite submissions that showcase, describe, discuss and/or analyze interventions, strategies, and standard operating procedures used by these entities to increase diversity, equity, and inclusivity in their disciplinary fields and STEMM workforce. This Topic is a great opportunity for researchers to highlight the applicability of relevant work to professional and scientific society communities. Similarly, this Topic is a great opportunity for society volunteers/staff to discuss innovations and programs that have worked well in their scientific society communities.

We highly encourage article submissions that address or include: perspectives of STEMM workforce training in disciplinary societies and associated challenges, implementation of programs to diversify society membership, diversity program assessment, promising practices in program implementation and assessment.
