This multidisciplinary research topic brings together the latest advances in neuroimaging applied to mapping functional brain networks in epilepsy. With technology such as simultaneous electroencephalography and functional magnetic resonance imaging (EEG-fMRI) now readily available, it is possible to non-invasively map epileptiform activity throughout the entire brain at millimetre resolution. Analysis of inter-ictal, pre-ictal and ictal epileptiform activity is beginning to reveal the nature of perturbations in large-scale brain networks. With the acquisition technology maturing, we find ourselves in an era of analysis methods development, refinement and application to extend our understanding of epileptic activity. This research topic aims to assemble the latest functional neuroimaging studies of brain networks in epilepsy, and methodological advancements in this domain. We welcome studies using any neuroimaging modalities, and particularly encourage submission of applied fMRI, EEG-fMRI and functional connectivity studies of epilepsy networks, as well as relevant methodological advances in neuroimaging acquisition or analysis. Reviews addressing recent advances are also welcome.
