About this Research Topic
AI is evolving at a rapid pace and has moved beyond automating repetitive tasks to continuously learn and mimic human reasoning. It has become more pervasive and embedded in our everyday lives. Therefore, developers of AI need to understand human needs, values, behavior, and cognition to design AI algorithms and applications that optimally support and empower users. Societal impacts for different stakeholders need to be understood. This calls for shifting our focus towards human-centered AI. Furthermore, the black-box nature and unintelligible complexity of AI confront users with a reduced sense of autonomy and agency when interacting with AI systems. Researchers are therefore investigating how to design transparent, explainable, and human-centered AI systems to increase trust and address various ethical and societal challenges.
In this research topic, the aim is to bring together existing knowledge and expand the scientific discussion from a multidisciplinary perspective on human-centered AI. While plenty of research is being done around this topic, it is important to explore and integrate research outcomes in the field from the lens of understanding how AI impacts human autonomy and agency. The research topic looks towards gathering evidence and consolidating grounded insights on how human-centered AI design could facilitate in respecting human autonomy and address related ethical and societal challenges posed by AI.
Contributions can address but are not limited to broader themes of:
• Explainable and transparent AI
• Human-robot collaborations
• Human-in-the-loop machine learning
• AI and human behavior
• User modeling and adaptation
• Ethics of AI
• Knowledge representation
• Social impact of automated decision-making
• Inclusive and fair AI design
