Frontiers in Systems Neuroscience is a multidisciplinary journal devoted to understanding the whole systems of the brain, such as those involved in spontaneous dynamics in different brain states or in sensation, movement, learning and memory, attention, reward, decision-making, reasoning, executive functions, and emotions.

With an international Editorial Board led by Chief Editors Maria V Sanchez-Vives (Biomedical Research Institute August Pi i Sunyer, Spain) and Olivia Gosseries (University of Liège, Belgium), this journal addresses the structural and functional architecture and dynamics of brain systems, as well as the principles of information processing, storage, and retrieval at the systems level. Indexed in PubMed Central (PMC), Scopus, Web of Science (SCIE), and the DOAJ, the journal covers the analysis of individual regions and multiple levels and nodes of information processing.

The journal covers the full range of systems neuroscience research, including:

cognitive modules that are engaged in specific tasks
dynamics of neuronal networks
experimental approaches involving different techniques ranging from single neurons recordings to full brain electrophysiology or imaging
experimental, computational and combined approaches to systems neuroscience
information processing and computations in neural circuits
short- and long-term changes in circuits that arise during activity-dependent development and plasticity
studies of brain function in physiological versus pathological conditions
studies of spontaneous and evoked activity, including sleep studies.

Frontiers in Systems Neuroscience is also interested in approaches addressing the following:

cellular analyses of reduced preparations that leave intact key computation elements
computational studies that complement experiments to better understand the emergent transformations in brain systems
multiple analysis approaches to better understand brain function during multiple form and time scales of information processing – in the normal and diseased brain and any species
recent advances in high-resolution imaging of brain activity and structure at network, cellular, and sub-cellular levels, along with the application of molecular tools
single-cell responses in alert primates.

The journal also welcomes submissions that advance the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically SDG 3: good health and well-being, promoting our biological understanding of brain health.
