Nanomaterials have enabled a spectacular leap in technological innovations. Gaining momentum from newly emerging properties and their synergy, further enhancement and integration of various functionalities have been made possible. The surfaces and interfaces of nanomaterials are the focus of intensive interdisciplinary research. It has become clear that their precise and atomically-resolved description is becoming critical for the design of the next generation materials and devices. This is especially important in the case of nanocomposites where the intimate contact between components amplifies possible contributions of interfacial interactions. This aspect of interaction-property relation in nanocomposites is still insufficiently explored, and it is of interest to identify to what extent the properties emerge as a result of interaction-based synergy or a co-action of individual components.

This Research Topic aims to contribute to the understanding of interactions between nano-objects and how they contribute to novel properties. Therefore, precise and atomically-resolved description of surfaces/interfaces are important for fundamentals of structure and interactions. The manuscripts submitted to this Research Topic should provide evidence that interaction between nano-objects can provide additional synergy capable of yielding new or significantly improved properties. All contributions should try to identify the main driving forces for interactions and their role in synergy of action.

We welcome Original Research articles as well as Review articles on areas including, but not limited to:

• Novel findings that highlight the relationship between structure, properties, and technological applications of nanomaterial surfaces and interfaces
• Studies of interactions between 0D-1D, 0D-2D, 1D-2D and 2D-2D nanomaterials and new properties
• Studies addressing the evolution of properties as a function of coverage/loading/thickness
• Rational design of size- and shape-specific nanostructures for fine-tuning the functionality of nanocomposites (e.g. thin film heterostructures, layered structures of 0D and 2D materials, etc.)
• New synthetic approaches that allow controllable, site-specific, and on-surface integration/modification of nanomaterials of various dimensionalities
• Computational chemistry-based description of interactions between nanoobjects with a focus on structure and the resultant properties
