Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) Revolution in the past 20 years gave birth and supported the fast growth of a new science called Bioinformatics. This in its turn boosted genomic and other omics studies.

Microbiology is a discipline that studies the structure and functions of individual microorganisms and microbial communities, mechanisms of their interrelationships in groups of different complexity, relationships between microorganisms and their environments or hosts.

Modern microbiology is increasingly focusing on complex communities of microorganisms that interact with the host in complex ways to influence many areas of life on Earth. This includes medicine, agriculture, industrial, environmental protection and other fields. Researchers are collecting more and more data that are already difficult or completely impossible to analyze without powerful computers.

Despite noticeable progress in the evolution of NGS technologies, there is still no one approach that could “read” genomic DNA from A to Z. As a result, finding a solution to the genome assembly problem has become one of the most important bioinformatics tasks. Without solving this problem, it will likely not be possible to discover, for example, the origins of an overwhelming number of diseases. The quest to find a solution to this problem attracts many talented mathematicians and programmers.

As scientists across the world work to discover new antibiotics, to analyze the immune systems and changes in the antibodies repertoires and to study the influence of the microbiota of the environment on humans and even the overall health of the planet, they generate huge amounts of data that needs to be analyzed, interpreted, stored and transferred.

In this Research Topic, we welcome Original Research papers, Opinion articles, mini Reviews and Reviews that cover algorithms used in microbial studies, smart tools developed to help with data analysis and discoveries that would not be possible without algorithms and tools these algorithms were implemented in.
