About this Research Topic
The pandemic has highlighted the need to rapidly develop infrastructures (hospitals) to deal with infectious patients, shifting production lines rapidly to produce medical goods needed to contain the infection and treat infectious patients (including drugs) as well as delivering these items to locations that could deliver the highest impact to the fight against the Pandemic.
It has highlighted the need for intelligent autonomous agents that cannot catch diseases to support the efforts of humans as they tackle the pandemic. This Research Topic looks to explore the various autonomous agents’ technologies and Artificial Intelligence techniques that could be brought to bear rapidly to deal with a Pandemic.
The outbreak of COVID-19 urges the development of technologies of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and robotics to fight the virus. AI-assisted imaging methods and tools have been investigated and have played an increasingly important role in the detection and diagnosis of the virus. Conversely, Robotic applications are less well understood and integrated.
In this Research Topic, we aim to collect the current research surrounding robotics and AI in the pandemic, in an attempt to overcome the challenges preventing wide-scale robotic deployment. We aim to address the feasibility and implications of robotics in the diagnosis and detection of COVID-19 as well as their ability to support the manufacture and delivery of medical goods. We welcome contributions which provide solutions to the technical, cultural and social-psychological challenges the industry faces.
Discussing the advances in this area will propel our understanding of how Robotics and AI can be used in the diagnosis and detection of COVID-19 and provide a framework for how we can integrate intelligent systems to reduce strain on our healthcare systems during this and future pandemics.
This Research Topic aims to address themes including, but not limited to:
• Robotics in the diagnosis of COVID-19
• Intelligent thermometry systems
• Robotics in sample collection
• Robotic technologies for Infection Prevention
• Robotics for the detection and sanitisation of viral hot-spots
• Robotic technologies for nursing
• Autonomous transportation and delivery of medical goods.
• Robotic technologies for rapid reconfiguration of manufacturing lines for drug and healthcare product
manufacture.
