The coronavirus epidemic is a major concern for each one of us, whether we figure among the regular citizens, those affected by the disease, or those involved in their treatment. Much has already been said, however, there is still a lack of profound understanding regarding specific situations, such as the interaction between the virus and the cardiovascular system.
We have read that elderly people with coronary artery disease, diabetes or hypertension as well as those with a history of stroke may have a higher risk of being infected, seem to be more severely affected than other persons, and have a higher mortality rate. But other infections, flus and stress situations have previously been shown to also affect the risk and prognosis of patients with cardiovascular disease, through myocarditis, arrhythmias, acute coronary syndromes, acute heart failure or cardiogenic shock.
The Research Topic aims at answering the following questions:
1) What is different with the COVID-19 virus? What have we learned so far and what did we know from previous epidemics, especially the recent SARS-CoV and MERS-CoV epidemics?
2) How can we best manage and monitor cardiovascular patients affected by the COVID-19 virus? For instance, should patients with cardiovascular disease get a higher priority when diagnosed with the COVID-19?
3) How can computational analysis help to assess the risk of COVID-19 in cardiovascular disease?
4) How can a systems approach explore mechanisms for cardiovascular complications of COVID-19?
5) How does COVID-19 affect immunity and inflammation?
6) Does this virus attack cardiovascular cells/organs?
7) What is the role of cardiovascular imaging in the diagnosis and management of COVID-19 patients, and how can multimodality imaging be used in the evaluation of cardiovascular complications in patients with COVID-19?
Other aspects are also critical to be presented and discussed and include:
1) The mechanisms of interaction of the disease with ACE inhibitors, angiotensin blockers and possibly other drugs used to treat cardiovascular patients.
2) The current knowledge from laboratory and preclinical studies.
3) The effect of the virus in patients with congenital heart disease.
4) The current challenges for a general cardiologist, the challenge for those practicing specialized interventions and for cardiovascular surgeons, the challenge of practicing CPR, etc.
5) The recommendations regarding physical activity and rehabilitation of patients after a cardiovascular event.
6) The particularities of specific countries or regions.
7) The role of government, academia, and industry and their interactions.
8) Possible other challenges.
9) Possible opportunities that can result from this crisis.
The Editors invite all clinicians and scientists around the world dealing with cardiovascular disease to submit their original manuscripts, reviews, opinion and case reports on the topic. Considering the urgency of the situation, all submissions will be reviewed with a high priority aiming at speeding up the dissemination of our current knowledge.
