The science surrounding weather and climate extremes, and their relationship with climate change, is rapidly expanding. This Research Topic collection will focus on the intersection of this research and the development of effective climate services. Climate attribution and climate diagnostic studies highlight the mechanisms driving extreme events, and elucidate their potential to increase in intensity and frequency as the Earth warms. This research can, and should, inform the development of 21st century climate services. Forewarned is forearmed. We can begin designing early warning systems today to monitor and predict the extremes that we are likely to see tomorrow.
The targeted submissions for this Research Topic will draw from the climate extremes and climate diagnostics community, but explicitly focus on applications relevant to disaster risk reduction. The climate extremes community should be able to help guide the development of useful climate services.
