Q&A with Tony Rhodes, editor-in-chief of the British Journal of Biomedical Science

As the official journal of the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS), the British Journal of Biomedical Science (BJBS) is committed to publishing new and innovative research and technology on the diagnosis and management of disease. Professor Tony Rhodes, the journal’s editor-in-chief, takes pride in BJBS’s reputation as the journal of the practicing biomedical scientist. Tony took on the role of editor-in-chief in 2021 when the journal transitioned to open access with Frontiers. Having had a successful career as a biomedical scientist in the NHS in London, Tony moved to academia in 2003 and has held various professorial posts since, both in the UK and in Malaysia. Ahead of IBMS Congress, where there will be the chance to meet Tony, here’s an opportunity to get to know the person behind BJBS. Credit: Frontiers Who inspired you most as a student? Many lecturers inspired me when I was a student, but I greatly admired my PhD supervisor, Prof. Bharat Jasani from the University of Wales College of Medicine, for his scientific understanding, inquisitiveness along with his kind and calm personality. What can you tell us about the first paper you published? My first paper is probably the best one that I’ve published. […]

Joseph M Sussman 2021 Prize Winners announced

Image: Shutterstock Frontiers in Built Environment is delighted to reveal the winners of the fourth Joseph M Sussman Prize celebrating the best articles published in the Transportation and Transit Systems section of the journal: Aleksandar Bauranov, Steven Parks, Xuan Jiang, Jasenka Rakas, Marta C González: “Quantifying the Resilience of the US Domestic Aviation Network During the Covid-19 Pandemic” The award-winning study selected this year provides valuable insights into the impacts of Covid-19 pandemic on the United States air transportation network. “Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, airlines dramatically reduced their flights, especially between March and August 2020.  As a result, 24% of airports closed. However, we found that the US aviation network’s efficiency dropped by only 5%, where efficiency is measured as the availability of paths between any two chosen airports. Maintaining high efficiency incurred a cost, causing emissions per passenger to be doubled. We also observed that an airport’s size was by far the best predictor of its closure, with smaller, regional airports being most adversely affected. Grants administered by the Federal Aviation Administration are the second best predictor in our model, indicating that financial aid distributed to airports in some cases made a difference between them closing and remaining open. Our methods can be used to […]

Nanotechnology Chief Editor appointed to the Regius Chair of Engineering at the University of Edinburgh

We are delighted to announce that Prof. Themis Prodromakis, Field Chief Editor of Frontiers in Nanotechnology and Specialty Chief Editor for Nanodevices, has been appointed to the Regius Chair of Engineering at the University of Edinburgh. When he takes up this appointment in May 2022, he will additionally establish the Centre for Electronics Frontiers in the School of Engineering at Edinburgh. This announcement is the latest in a list of honors for Prof. Prodromakis, as he already holds a Royal Academy of Engineering Chair in Emerging Technologies and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, the British Computer Society, the IET, and the Institute of Physics. Prof. Prodromakis is well-known for the development of suitable hardware to meet the ever-growing demands of AI computation in the modern era. His technology is based on an electronic component known as a “memristor”, that can ‘remember’ the amount of charge that has passed through it. This enables the storage of multiple data units in a single component. Prof. Prodromakis used nanomaterials to construct efficient memristors for use in novel artificial neural networks to support state-of-the-art machine learning and big-data processing. He also devised a novel circuit design with memristors embedded in conventional computer circuitry, increasing […]
