Her fields of professional interest are psycholinguistics, discourse analysis, language acquisition and cognitive science. In particular, her research focuses on the mechanisms that support language processing during interactive conversation.

Brown-Schmidt is a professor of Psychology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
