Liver is the site of complex immune activity mediated by a variety immune cell repertoire and non-hematopoietic cell populations. Therefore, liver has also been considered as an immune organ. Abnormal development and differentiation of immune cells are directly involved in the onset and progression in liver diseases. Hematopoiesis in the bone marrow and T lymphocyte maturation in the thymus constitute the major events of immune cell development. In addition, immune cells have strong plasticity; different tissue microenvironment further promotes the differentiation of macrophages and T helper cells into specific phenotypes and functional subsets. With the development of single-cell sequencing and multicolor flow cytometry technologies, new immune cell subsets are continuously identified, refreshing the understanding of the regulatory mechanisms of immune cell differentiation and disease pathogenesis.
This research topic aims to present the current state of understanding of immune cell development and differentiation in liver diseases, including the interaction between the immune cells and the microenvironment, the regulatory mechanisms of the abnormally differentiated immune cells in the occurrence of diseases, and to explore potential therapeutic strategies.
