The leading cause of worldwide mortality is cardiovascular disease (CVD). Despite many significant advances in the field, CVD continues to claim more lives that all cancers combined. There is then an urgent need for more efficacious treatment modalities or therapeutics that may help in the management of these diseases. For such potential new drugs to be determined, a better understanding of the underlying mechanisms and the potential targets is critical. This collection seeks to highlight those emerging mechanisms and targets that could be employed for a better treatment of CVD.
This Research Topic tackles emerging mechanisms in cardiovascular disease. Original papers highlighting new or understudied targets are critical for future endeavors in identifying and characterizing more efficacious treatment for CVD. The Research Topic will comprise several sub-themes, but prime attention will be given to hypertension, atherosclerosis, and peripheral vascular disease. Review mansucripts that critically discuss, not just summarize, the pertinent literature are especially welcome.
While we welcome all papers dealing with molecular, cellular, or biochemical mechanisms implicated in CVD, manuscripts focusing on hypertension, atherosclerosis and peripheral vascular disease are most highly encouraged. Papers that identify or discuss targets that have been either overlooked or understudied are of importance. Equally importantly, papers dealing with mechanisms that have emerged recently (during the last 10 years) are especially relevant to this research topic, and hence, are most encouraged.
