Cancer is one of the leading causes of death and remains a great challenge worldwide. For many cancer types, the stage at initial diagnosis and the choice of suitable therapy can greatly affect the clinical outcome. Biomarkers that are associated with specific cancer diagnoses and biologies can be instrumental in early disease detection - e.g. through the measurement of cancer-specific markers in the peripheral blood - as well as in the selection and monitoring of the appropriate, personalized therapy.
Recent advances in the technical feasibility and application of genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics and metabolomics have significantly improved our understanding of cancer biology. The novel understanding derived from molecular profiling and "systems" type studies has brought about the evolutionary transformation in personalized cancer diagnosis and treatment. Nowadays molecular biomarkers play an indispensable role in cancer diagnosis and the management of therapeutic procedures.
This Research Topic aims to cover the spectrum of the latest development with respect to genetic and proteomic biomarkers, with a specific focus on markers used in the early detection and classification of solid tumors as well as in the methodologies and procedures applied to that aim. Research from laboratory results from clinical trials or reports of interesting cases is within the scope of the current Research Topic if including substantial genomics or related "-omics" components.
In this Research Topic, we welcome the submissions of original research, reviews, mini-reviews, methods, and brief research reports focusing on, but not limited to the following subtopics:
1. Recent advances in the identification, characterization and validation of genomic and proteomic biomarkers that are associated with solid tumors early detection.
2. Genetic or proteomic biomarkers identified and captured by novel techniques in solid tumors early detection
3. Basic research of genetic and proteomic biomarkers involved in the early detection of solid tumors.
4. Case reports of rare cancer types or interesting cases in solid tumor associated with genetic or proteomic early detection biomarkers in clinical practice.
Please note: Pure bioinformatics studies not accompanied by any experimental validation will not be considered for this collection. And purely proteomic biomarker studies are not relevant to this section and cannot be accepted here.
