About this Research Topic
Other aspects which are gaining increasing interest, mainly due to severe pollution issues related with the massive use of non-biodegradable plastics and their accumulation in both landfill and aquatic environments, are the development of biodegradable and recyclable polymers to close the loop.
Therefore, we encourage the submission of original research articles, reviews, and mini-reviews to this Research Topic. Particularly, we are looking for research articles focused on:
- Development of novel monomers from renewable resources, mainly non-edible biomass derived chemicals.
- The (eco-friendly) synthesis, development and application of sustainable/biobased polymers and materials.
- Ecofriendly development of biodegradable/recyclable polymers.
- Development of innovative biodegradation approaches.
- Development of innovative depolymerisation methodologies (based on e.g. ionic liquids and/or biocatalysis) in recycling approaches.
In short, this Research topic series gives a panorama of where we are, in terms of sustainable polymers and materials considering all aspects of their development (from monomers to end-life). Importantly this will shed some light into future trends and directions with also an applied perspective.
Keywords: Sustainable polymers, renewable resources, eco-friendly synthesis, (bio)degradation, recycling, closing the loop
Important Note: All contributions to this Research Topic must be within the scope of the section and journal to which they are submitted, as defined in their mission statements. Frontiers reserves the right to guide an out-of-scope manuscript to a more suitable section or journal at any stage of peer review.
