About this Research Topic
Immunometabolism is an emerging field of research at crossroads between two classic and distinct disciplines: immunology and metabolism. However, in the last decade, a great body of evidence has emerged to suggest functional links between metabolism and immunology. The recent research at the interface between these disciplines is unraveling functional links between hormones, metabolic diseases, immunity and inflammation. This raises many relevant questions and challenging surrounding the design of diagnostic tools and novel therapies to reduce morbidity and mortality associated with hormonal, metabolic and immune diseases. Evidence is mounting to demonstrate that a complex neuroendocrine circuit involving a plethora of factors and cells functionally relates immune response and energy metabolism.
However, our basic understanding of the immunometabolic interactions is still incomplete for generating new hypotheses and well-supported and scientifically sound therapeutic strategies. We need to formulate and test new hypotheses and progress this field. Our present knowledge of how metabolic pathways and hormonal alterations interact with immune cells in a bidirectional way is far too rudimentary.
Thus, we welcome focused and valuable contributions of our authors on this topic. We need to pursue novel approaches that integrate our perspectives of endocrinology, metabolism and immunity in the broadest sense. Bringing together novel concepts and methodologies developed in these great areas is one of the best tools for scientific progress we have. This Research Topic is an attempt to offer our authors and readership a lively sounding board for new ideas and exciting results.
