About this Research Topic
Cardiovascular calcification increasingly afflicts our aging, dysmetabolic world citizenry. It is an actively regulated form of extracellular matrix mineralization -- modified in response to (morpho)genetic, metabolic, mechanical, inflammatory, and endocrine cues. The presence and accrual of valve and vascular calcium has ominous consequence, increasing the risk for stroke, heart failure, myocardial infarction, progressive renal disease, and dementia. No pharmacological therapies currently exist for preventing or reversing arterial calcification, except the contributions of phosphate binders in the setting of chronic kidney disease. Over the past two decades, we have learned much concerning the molecular and cellular biology that controls vascular mineralization, including the unique genetic underpinnings that predispose to disease in humans and preclinical rodent models. In this Research Topic, we seek to provide a “snap-shot” of the cutting-edge research in the field – research providing insights that afford novel therapeutic approaches to the prevention and treatment of valve and vascular calcification.
We welcome manuscripts of the following types: review articles, original reports, and methodology papers.
