Pathogenic microorganisms have a primary goal of exploiting the metabolites of the host cells by manipulating the host metabolism. They can rewire the metabolic interactions of the host with the major objective of sustained survival. Host cells, on the other hand, try to prevent the disruption caused by pathogens in their metabolic networks. Thus, several metabolic changes are induced in both pathogen and host sides in the course of infection. Understanding these alterations is crucial to develop novel diagnostics and treatment strategies for infectious diseases.
