About this Research Topic
The progress of researchonbiomolecules, as peptides, enzymes and biopolymers, as well as their production and purification have enabledtailor-madeapplications in medicine, e.g. systems for controlled drug release, endovascular prostheses - stents, orthopedic devices or as active pharmaceutical ingredients (API).
This Research Topic will be focused on novel techniques in bioprocess engineering of biomolecules and bioproducts produced by microorganisms, as well as theirpurification, modification and applications fortoday’s and future, industrial, foodand medical applications. For this reason, we are pleased to launch this new topic issue.
We propose the investigation of a variety of development process intended to present and discuss breakthrough technological developments, which are involved in production, purification and application of biomolecules produced by microorganisms, including:
• Production of biomolecules and biopolymers by microorganisms (fungi and bacteria),
• Purification techniques applied for industrial applications,
• Tailored production and modificationof microbial biomolecules forfood area,
• Application of biomolecules in thepharmaceutical and biomedical area (bionanotechnology, drug delivery).
This collection welcomes review papers, short communications and original research articles.
Keywords: upstream production, downstream processing, biomolecules, bacterial nanocelulose, biopolymers
Important Note: All contributions to this Research Topic must be within the scope of the section and journal to which they are submitted, as defined in their mission statements. Frontiers reserves the right to guide an out-of-scope manuscript to a more suitable section or journal at any stage of peer review.
