Precision medicine holds immense promise for revolutionizing the treatment and prevention of neurodegenerative diseases. As populations age globally, the prevalence of disorders like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's is rising, creating an urgent need for more effective, personalized approaches. The integration of artificial intelligence and machine learning with multi-omics data analysis has opened new avenues for understanding disease mechanisms, identifying biomarkers, and developing targeted therapies. Yet, the full potential of precision medicine in neurodegenerative research remains constrained by challenges linked to data sharing​, data harmonization​ and integration​ across data types​. Several major data sharing initiatives are well-established including the AD Knowledge portal, the AMP-PD Knowledge platform and the Seattle Alzheimer’s Disease Brain Cell Atlas. Repositories exist for analysis code. Major efforts for harmonization of data include the Alzheimer’s Disease Sequencing Project Phenotype Harmonization Consortium and the RNAseq Harmonization Study. Guidelines for data and analytical methods sharing are issued by funders and journals. However, fragmentation in the policy landscape and data format standards have hindered the creation of a robust data-sharing ecosystem. Innovative strategies are needed to address these limitations while promoting interoperability and public engagement. By leveraging emerging technologies and promoting data-sharing strategies, researchers can accelerate the translation of precision medicine approaches from bench to bedside, ultimately improving outcomes for patients with neurodegenerative diseases.

This Research Topic aims to explore how data sharing and AI can empower precision medicine in the context of neurodegenerative diseases. By fostering a multidisciplinary dialogue, this collection seeks to highlight the ways in which big data, machine learning, and collaborative data infrastructures can accelerate breakthroughs in these fields.
